JULIA NOLAN BA (Hons) MIXED MEDIA FINE ART

Abstract and figurative paintings are influenced by a childhood spent in the industrial city of Sheffield, renowned for its steel. Distressed and fatigued surfaces, scratched and worn relating to the years watching her father, a painter and decorator at work.

Growing up on the Gunsite in Sheffield was a major inspiration as was finding old rusty bomb heads and playing amongst remnants of discarded bunkers dating back to WWII and dilapidated, crumbling buildings connecting to memories of the past.

Worn and weathered fragments of rusty metal, transformed and patinated by time and nature, are often used in artwork in combination with other found objects, selecting and considering each piece, a subjective process, recognising a potential in each object. Liquid metal and metal turnings add fascination to the sometimes heavy textures of sand mixed into paint, corrugated card, black lava, glass beads and glue gun dribbles for effect. At times paint is delicately scratched into to reveal a mixture of translucent colours underneath or plastered on by the use of a palette knife. Text also plays a part in description, often deliberately partially covered or back to front.

Mark making, paint stains and torn paper all stir up emotions from the past. The artworks are new, re-invented and brought to life, the surfaces having a history, long forgotten, telling a story and representing the passing of time. Hidden images and text as in the ‘Berlin Wall’ series add emotion and intrigue to the pieces.
